Q: How do I get books and articles from other libraries?

Interlibrary Loan

At times during your research, you may need an article we don't have access to or a book we do not own. The easiest way to obtain items we don't have is by requesting them from other libraries through Interlibrary Loan. We are able to request articles and books through this service.

You can request items we do not own or have access to directly through a button on some of our databases, or by filling out our ILL Request Form. This service is available to current students, faculty, and staff whose library accounts are in good standing.

Most ILL requests are filled within one to two weeks. If you need an item right away, we cannot guarantee it will arrive from the other library quickly. Please plan accordingly. Most libraries have restrictions on the items they will lend - for example, most libraries do not lend textbooks. They also determine how long you may check the item out. We cannot extend the due date for you.

For more information, please take a look at our ILL Guide or email the ILL team.

TexShare and Reciprocal Borrowing with Rice University

A Texshare card lets you borrow books directly from other libraries in the area. You can get the card for free at the Circulation Desk or fill out the application online here.

Reciprocal Borrowing with Rice University allows you to request an item that Rice University has and pick it up at the Fondren Library. You can access the request form by clicking Rice University-Fondren Library at this link. This may be quicker than requesting an ILL if the item is readily available.

WorldCat

Find out what books other libraries have using WorldCat. This website lets you search the catalogs of thousands of libraries simultaneously, and tells you which local libraries own a certain book. You can search for items at WorldCat.org. Your local library may have the item you need.

Houston Public Library

If you have a Texas address, you are eligible for a free Houston Public Library card. A card provides access to HPL's extensive collections and online databases. Cards can be obtained at any HPL branch. The Freed-Montrose branch of HPL is located nearby at 4100 Montrose Blvd. Houston, TX 77006.
