Q

Is there a database for biographies of scholarly authors?

I want to research the ages of the various authors of scholarly articles for a paper I have to write. Is there a reputable website from which I can get that sort of information?

Answer

For living authors, their university home page can be a good source. Then (for anyone), try the library database, Biography and Geneaology Master Index (BGMI), which refers you to many essential references for that info, such as Marquis Who's Who, which you then come to the library to consult (so it goes, BGMI>Library Catalog>book itself).

Sometimes it's faster to check our database, Credo Reference, which searches numerous editions of Who's Who. Big-name scholars especially are often in there. We also have encyclopedias of scholars in different fields, which are usually indexed in the BGMI. So that's really the best tool we have.

Let us know if you'd like additional help.
